Get ready for a crazy-intense hour of television when “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” returns next week. The season 14 finale ended with a cliffhanger that left the fate of Det. Benson (Mariska Hargitay) in question after a sadistic rapist and murderer turned up in her apartment with a gun pointed at her head.

But as riveting as the first hour of season 15 will be (and trust us, you’re going to be white-knuckling the arms of your couch), the writers fortunately saw fit to give fans a little bit of a breather from the intensity. In a clip that NBC is sharing first with TODAY, the “SVU” gang offers a little bit of office humor before their day turns to hell.

As is often the case, the chuckles come courtesy of Munch (Richard Belzer), who tries to boost office morale by — what else? — guilt-tripping Det. Amaro (Danny Pino) into coughing up for some very expensive coffee.

Laugh now, because when the action starts, there’s no stopping for air until the credits roll.

“Law & Order: SVU” returns with a two-hour premiere at 9 p.m. on Sept. 25 on NBC.

PREVIOUSLY ON… | A relaxing day off for the SVU detectives turned into a hunt for William Lewis, a sexual predator talented at using legal technicalities to avoid jail time. When Benson returned home for a much-needed staycation, an out-on-bail Lewis grabbed Liv, held a gun to her head and took her to the bedroom — leaving Olivia’s fate up in the air.

COMING UP NEXT | Executive producer Warren Leight says the two-hour Season 15 premiere finds Benson alive, but not well. “The most harrowing episode” of SVU to date (“Even case-hardened crew members were staring at the monitor in shock,” Leight notes) kicks off a season-long arc that deals with Benson’s traumatic experience, including the effect it may have on her relationship with Det. Brian Cassidy. SVU‘s Season 15 police blotter also tackles racial profiling, military rape and sleazy politicians.

TVLINE BONUS SPOILER | Several of the drama’s past guest stars will be back for brief stints, including Arrested Development’s Jeffrey Tambor as Ben Cohen (“The lawyer we love to hate,” Leight jokes) and Go On’s Laura Benanti as Amaro’s wife Maria.

RETURN DATE | Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 9/8c (NBC, two hours)

When “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” returns for its 15th season this fall, we pick up in Olivia Benson’s (Mariska Hargitay) apartment just a few hours after we left her in the cliffhanger finale — with a gun to her head, courtesy of Lewis (Pablo Schreiber), a rapist so horrible he is called the Beast.

In the season premiere, airing Wednesday, Sept. 25 on NBC, Hargitay is asked to do something she has never done before … and she dove right in! So says, executive producer/showrunner Warren Leight, who adds, “What Pablo and Mariska did in that first episode, everyone on the crew felt it was the most harrowing episode we have ever done. Even the most case-hardened crew members were, ‘Oh, my God.’ I know there is a lot of anticipation, but it will prove to have been worth the wait. They really went there as actors.”

For more exclusive scoop from Leight on Season 15 of “SVU,” including reveals on some of the ripped-from-the-headline cases to come, such as sexting politicians and sex slaves kept prisoner for years, check out the rest of his interview with xfinityTV:

Is Amaro [Danny Pino] going to find romance this season? He reconnected with someone inappropriate last year.

It is a complicated story. He had a son that he didn’t know about. The son surfaced several years later. His marriage is in shambles and he is a part-time dad to two kids from two separate women. I think he is happy to get to work and focus on his work.

His wife was played by Laura Benanti and we are hoping she will come back for an episode we are doing on military rape fairly early in the season. She works for the pentagon now in public relations, so she will be coming back for that episode.

Amaro is grappling with life — in some of the same ways that Olivia is trying to deal with life after the trauma — Amaro is trying to figure out what his life is going to be after that picture he had of a perfect marriage is gone.

“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” premieres with two back-to-back episodes on Wednesday, Sept. 25 beginning at 9/8c on NBC.

The “Law & Order: SVU” finale is going out with a bang.

In HuffPost TV’s exclusive preview above, Detectives Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Rollins (Kelli Giddish) are stumped by a mysterious criminal. “I had him,” Benson says. “He was getting off on telling me the details.” But things soon escalate and Benson finds herself in mortal danger.

“The finale starts off in a very casual tone where we’re all on a day off,” “SVU” star Danny Pino told TVGuide.com. “Then it slowly gets darker and darker, and by the end of the episode, it’s about as dark as the episodes have ever gotten [and] I don’t know if [Amaro] can help Benson.”

Check out NBC’s official description of the episode, titled “Her Negotiation,” and tune in for the “SVU” finale on Wed., May 22 at 9 p.m. ET:

Question: Do you have any spoilers for Law & Order: SVU? There’s loads of rumors going around that Olivia might die in the finale. —Kayley
Ausiello: OK, so… apparently Mariska Hargitay has not yet inked a deal to return next season, despite my earlier assertion to the contrary. (In my defense, this is the only time I’ve ever been wrong about anything ever in the history of everything.) So, that little development, coupled with Kelli Giddish’s promise that the May 22 finale is “insane,” makes me wonder if the rumors might be true. “I cannot believe they ended it this way,” Giddish adds. ”I gasped, myself, when I finished reading it. The fans are going to go nuts. It’s jarring and emotional, because so often our detectives never, ever let the perp get the upper hand, and that happens in this episode.” The episode opens with the detectives enjoying “a day off,” elaborates co-star Danny Pino. “It’s a very unusual way to go into an episode, where we’re all relaxing, doing our own things. And then it does this slow descent into a very dark place. It’s probably one of our darkest. And by the end of it… I mean, I really don’t know how we’re going to get out of it. I feel like the writers have really painted themselves into a corner.” As to whether Benson makes it out alive, all I can tell you is what Warren Leight tells TVLine: that the finale is “a struggle for survival between Benson and [a perp nicknamed] the Beast… I guess it can go one of three ways, you know?” Not exactly comforting, is it?

Law & Order: SVU fans, prepare yourselves for one of the darkest episodes yet.

On the Season 14 finale (Wednesday, May 22, 9/8c), the squad is trying to put away a sociopath (played by Pablo Schreiber) who is outsmarting them at every turn. By the end, Detective Benson (Mariska Hargitay) is in a very precarious situation.

NBC’s Fall 2013 Schedule: Revolution moves to Wednesdays, Parenthood to Thursdays

“The finale starts off in a very causal tone where we’re all on a day off,” Danny Pino told TVGuide.com at the NBC upfront red carpet. “Then it slowly gets darker and darker, and by the end of the episode, it’s about as dark as the episodes have ever gotten [and] I don’t know if [Amaro] can help Benson.”

Also in the video, Kelli Giddish talks about the tough run her character has had more recently, but adds that she’s happy that the arc gave her the opportunity to shoot some touching scenes with Ice T.

TV Scorecard: What’s renewed? What’s canceled?

“There were a couple of really sweet scenes,” Giddish says. “I love having Ice as a partner. I come home every day with a quote from him. My friends are sick of hearing about Ice T, but then I’m like, ‘No listen to this’ and they’re like, ‘That is wise, man.'”

Watch the video for more from Pino and Giddish, as well as Dann Florek’s and Richard Belzer’s takes on the finale. Plus: Pino names the biggest diva on set.

The Season 14 finale, titled “Her Negotiation,” will feature the SVU squad going after a sociopathic serial rapist who has had a run of extraordinary luck in the legal system. But ending the creep’s string of victories in the courthouse won’t be nearly as important as protecting Detective Benson, who becomes the rapist’s next target.

PRE-FINALE EPISODES | Mosh-pit gang rape, comatose victim in a rowboat, drug dealer with a vendetta – the end ofSVU‘s season is serving up a nightmare smorgasbord for its fans. On May 1, the aforementioned assault on a young woman “turns into a difficult legal case that, in many ways, rests on the testimony of an Army vet (Once Upon a Time‘s Eion Bailey) who has PTSD,” executive producer Warren Leight previews. Next, the May 8 episode centers on someone from Fin’s past who’s holding an extreme grudge. “In the teaser, someone takes a shot at our guys and hits,” he says. “It’s a desperate race for 40 minutes to figure out who’s doing it, how they’re doing it, how to get them.” Then, the season’s penultimate outing on May 15 is “a pure mystery” in which an unconscious woman in a rowboat washes ashore next to the mayor’s mansion in Manhattan. “It’s a story about the double lives that people lead,” Leight teases.

MAY 22 SEASON FINALE | Right now, even Leight isn’t exactly sure how SVU will finish its 14th season. What he does know: The finale is about a serial rapist/killer “who’s very lucky and has managed to escape… capture over and over. We call him The Beast.” Olivia decides she’s going to nab the perp once and for all… but her fate ultimately rests in NBC’s hands. “Because we don’t know yet if the show’s coming back or not, we don’t know how the episode ends yet,” Leight says wryly.
